Remember the
10-Minute Rule!
by Marcia

Remember the 10 minute rule: stop lecturing after 10 minutes and give your learners a chance to review and apply the content. Pair-shares and small group discussions are fast and fun ways to increase interaction and get your learners talking about the topic. Studies show that interaction increases learners' retention level.

Here are some tried-and-true statements you can use to kick off the discussions when pair-shares are appropriate:

• Tell your partner the 3 most important things you’ve just learned.

• Make a drawing representing the idea or concept that you consider most important, then share it with your partner.

• Tell your partner the one way will use this information

. • Write down one word that captures the essence of what you think is the most critical point, then share it with your partner.

• Write down one word that captures the essence of what you think is critical to remember, then share it with your partner.

Cathy Brewster, Staff Development Instructor for Truckee Meadows Community College, NV:

The script is great – couldn't do the training without it! It is wonderful content and a great program and the feedback sheets reflect that. The flow went well; moved along quickly but not too fast. The activites teach the material – I know that is why you designed it that way. I used everything you gave me. Thanks, Marcia and Sharon!

Testimonials from Cathy's participants:

* Fast-paced, realistic, empowering! If you want to be a crackerjack teacher, take this class as a starting point.
Sharon Hanson, RN BSN, Psychology Instructor, TMCC

* I became more comfortable with utilizing interactive techniques because the instructor actually DEMONSTRATED the concepts as they were being taught.
Dr. Val Haskin, College Instructor, TMCC

* Worth my time and effort – absolutely amazing!
Heidi Himler, Nutrition Instructor, TMCC

* This is a novel, fun class. You leave with multiple ideas that can be used right away. It's fun connecting with peers and getting to know new people. This is a great "pick-me-up" class – a great way to start the new semester enthusiastically! I wanted to keep going with the class and the activities.

Michael Dawson, Training Specialist, Department of Defense, MD:

The facilitator's guide is extremely easily to follow. The format of the workshop flowed with ease from one point to the next.

The PowerPoint slides and facilitator’s and participant’s materials were well organized. The workshop encouraged participation, cooperation, and high energy. At the end of the training, workshop participants stood and applauded with enthusiasm and elation. This is a super idea to facilitate this workshop directly in the workplace.

Testimonials from Michael’s participants:

• The “quick to implement” activities were great. I could take them and use them in my courses immediately. The way that Michael delivered the workshop was for a beginner to advanced level trainer.

• I love courses/exercises that got me thinking “out of the box” and validate the good teaching techniques that I’ve learned before.

• A truly insightful study into escaping the dangers of lectures. I look forward to getting people excited about learning again.

* Learning how learners learn and retain information was very informative. I now can rethink the way I deliver training.

• I’m now re-energized about teaching and facilitating. I learned so many ways to “amp up” my training style to help make the training “stick.” The workshop was fun, interactive, and insightful.

Katie P. Mangett, CHT, Quality Development Manager, Xanterra Parks and Resorts, CO:

I found the trainer's guide to be very user-friendly. It provided me with all the information I needed to effectively facilitate "Preventing Death by Lecture". The guide included background information and materials, power point slides and reference materials all in one easy-to-follow format.

Thanks to the thoroughness of the trainer's guide, my first PDL class was energizing and fun to teach and I received an enthusiastic and positive response from the participants! Sharon and Marcia have successfully translated their upbeat and interactive style into a facilitator's guide for trainers at all skill levels.

Testimonials from Katie’s participants:

• I wish all training classes were this fun, educational, and rewarding. This was the best train-the-trainer workshop.

• The training class was like a buffet – take what you like, leave the rest. It was fun, interactive, and informative and really made me rethink the way I train.

• There were so many valuable ideas and things I can bring into my classroom. It made so much sense. This is the best class I have taken to enhance my training job.

• I came away with more enthusiasm and excitement about becoming a trainer!

• I think this program is one of the best and should be used regularly. Wakes them up and shakes them up!

• The presenter of this program has to be very knowledgeable and energetic – Katie has definitely exceeded the standards required for conducting this class.

I felt very comfortable presenting the material and I appreciated having a script to follow and thorough directions in the manual. Testimonials from Pam’s participants:

• I came with a need and it was resolved in 20 minutes.

• There are numerous strategies to enhance and enrich.

• This session was very actively delivered; it was engaging and interesting.

• It was valuable to be engaged in active learning as participants
• Small group work helped drive home key points.

• My key learning – “brain works” – why students “tune out” after 10 minutes.

• I now understand the brain’s function in learning.
